June 27th - Medford firefighters spent nearly all day fighting a three-alarm fire that broke out at Automotive Services of Boston on Mystic Avenue around 10 a.m. Firefighters arrived on scene with smoke showing from the building. The 2nd 3rd and 4th alarms were struck bringing in mutual aid from Somerville, Malden, Everett, Chelsea, Arlington and Cambridge plus other mutual aid from area departments to cover the City.
The building which was mainly a rim-cleaning service, which means the building contained a large amount of cleaning solvents Firefighters battled flames from the ground and the top of nearby buildings, successfully containing the flames to one building.
The building burned for over 3 hours blanketing the entire area with thick black smoke and at times unable to see the fire apparatus in the street, before they could bring the blaze under control. The fire was under the rubber roof of this approximately 1 story 50x50 building and was very difficult to gain access to. A nearby tractor was able to come in to the fire scene and use it's digging shovel to pull down the area of roof that was on fire so firefighters could get water into that part of the building .
The only reported injury associated with the fire was one Medford firefighter, who was taken to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
It's is believed the fire started after undergoing an electrical upgrade, which electricians had been there working on for several days. The building appears to be a total loss along with some of the auto's that they were working on at the time of the fire.
