A fast moving thunderstorm moved through the area and lightning struck this large 2 1/2 story dwelling causing a fire on the top floor. The was found by a passerby (wife of the Chief of the Deaprtment) who notified her husband at home smoke about the fire.
Three alarms were quickly sounded due to the intense heat and the difficulty in making the attic space of this home and getting to the seat of the fire. Mutual aid to the scene came from Shirley, Groton, Lunenburg, Devens and Fitchburg.
Once the roof was open, firefighters were able to get up into the attic and surpress the fire.
