Shortly after 0200 hrs a single 911 call rang in for a fire at 15 Fifth St. As apparatus were enroute calls continued to pour in. On arrival of Deputy Chief Daniel Kirouac fire was showing from the rear of the 3-story 35x50 building. The working fire was now struck and a call for and Engine from Fitchburg to the fire and the 2nd alarm was called. The exposures on the B & D side were now being threatened as the fire rapidly consumed the entire 2nd and 3rd floors. Numerous 2 1/2s and deck guns were being deployed on the fire. Fitchburg Fire arrived on the 2nd with there Tower Ladder and took the A/B side and Leominsters Ladder 1 had the A/D corner. On arrival of Chief of Department Robert Sideleau II the 3rd alarm was struck having companies arrive and pick up hydrants to feed all the lines. Water sources were tough due to the home being on a dead end street. It took firefighters about 1 hr 30 min to bring the blaze under control. The only person living in the home had stated he dragged a mattress out of the 1st floor which was the only occupied floor. The 2nd and 3rd floors were completely gutted for years while the building was going through renovations. One firefighter was treated for smoke inhalation and was transported and released. Mutual aid to the fire were Fitchburg, Sterling and Lancaster while Westminster, Clinton, Lunenburg covered the City. On another note, the home on the A side burned in 1973 at 0300 hrs. 38 years and 1 hour earlier this fire.
