Fitchburg dispatched an Engine for smoke in the area around the upper common when fire alarm received a call for a fire on Chestnut St. The assignment was filled out and E4 arrived with smoke showing from a vacant 2 story building. Firefighters under the command of Deputy Chief Paul Vallincourt arrived as heavy smoke was pushing from the 1st and 2nd floors. Firefighters did an excellent job bringing this blaze under control within 30 minutes. One firefighter was treated for a minor eye injury. The cause is undetermined at this time.
